The Case For Spring Fashion
I have an immensely pathetic problem when it comes to being present.
Every winter, I can’t wait to dress for spring. In the spring, I’m desperate for the rain to stop so I can donn my thin fabrics and sheer things. Summer comes and I’m insufferable—vowing, day after day, that this season, undoubtedly, is the worst season to get dressed. And then fall comes. I enjoy slinking my body into layers and whipping scarves around exposed skin for about two weeks until I remember this weather simply means that winter is on the way. I then recoil and spend the next four months wishing myself back to summer.
Every season, this leaves me with the necessary task of reminding myself why I look forward to getting dressed at that particular time of year—so as not to lose my mind in the crocheted vortex that is my inability to stay present.
So, as always— a little late, and petulantly written— I present to you: The case for spring fashion.
The first thing that comes to mind in spring is a trench. Trench translates to rain, rain translates to cover, and cover translates to where has my outfit gone?
But what if the cover was not some beige thing, but instead a tiger-printed, velour-lined cape?
What if the things in my wardrobe meant for protection and utility could have some personality too?

I’ll never forget when I found this trench on eBay. I withstood my mandatory 24-hour waiting period before allowing myself to purchase something after it’s been unearthed from whatever corner of the internet I’ve been prowling. But to my surprise, when I woke up the next morning, it had already been purchased. I spent the next two hours fighting a woman in England over it via email. Alas, the Brit conceded, and I was being shipped my twenty-pound, 1980s vintage tiger-print raincoat.
Spring also provides an opportunity to layer with fabrics no other season allows. Heavy fabrics like wool and leather can carefully be placed over tulle skirts and silk dresses without so much as a gleam of sweat or a chill on the spine. Everything in the wardrobe is fair game—so long as you plan to be outside in either the winter morning or the summer evening, and dress accordingly. Spring has the uncanny ability to place every season into a 24-hour period. From sun-up to sundown, you can experience it all: scarves, tank tops, hats, and mini skirts.
Which leads me to my next point—
The mixing of silhouettes.
My love letter to shorts paired with boots and a sweater would be never-ending. Emotion oozes out of this stylist's heart at the mere thought of the silhouette: my body covered, my feet warmed. A breeze knocks against my knees as if it snuck up with the intention of lifting my skirt to the sky—and to its dismay, was met with immovable denim instead. Ha. Idiot.
The last thing that comes to mind when I think of spring is the perfect dainty heel. A blessed time in footwear when my soles aren’t quite sweating to the point of a slip ‘n slide. I can enjoy the loose frivolity of a sandal without the need to be strapped in at the heel. I have yet to find the perfect shoe this year. However, as always, there are some contenders. What I can only describe as a Polly Pocket shoe is the heel leading the pack, shortly followed by some other spring suitors. Only time will tell which of these slips into my mailbox—and onto my feet—before the heat of summer becomes unrelenting.
